Abstract
Hemolytic disease of the newborn(HDN) due to ABO or Rh incompatibility has been one of serious problems in the neonates. The authors reviewed 18 cases of hemolytic diseases of the newborn (HDN) due to Rh-Hr incompatibility that were diagnosed at
Severance Hospital during the past 9 years of 1983-1992. Anti-D was the cause of HDN in 12 cases, anti-c in 2 cases, and anti-D+C, anti-c+E, anti-e and anti-C were identified separately in the other 4 cases. Exchange transfusion was necessary in
3
cases
whose causative antibodies were anti-c+E, anti-e, and anti-C respectively. These data suggest that Rh antibodies other than anti-D could be the cause of severe HDN, and antibody screening test might be desirable at the tirst visit of all pregnant
women
for the early detection of more HDN and the procurement of compatible blood in case of emergency blood transfusions.
